The 2008 FLOWER FESTIVAL

This is yet another spectacular and thought-provoking display devised and provided by the members of the  FLOWER CLUBS of CESTRIAN, HARTON, HERRINGTON, SOUTH SHIELDS, SUNDERLAND, the INNER WHEEL of BISHOPWEARMOUTH, CLEVELAND, HOUGHTON LE SPRING, CROOK, SEABURN, plus HETTON METHODIST CHURCH and our own administrator, SANDRA THURLBECK. They certainly enhance the Minster, albeit for an all-too-short period of time.

It is sadly appropriate that, among the themes so eloquently expressed by their skill, one of the subjects includes remembrance of the fallen. How apt, therefore, that this exhibition tragically coincides with the funeral today of Paratrooper Nathan Cuthbertson, one of the most recent of those who have given their lives for the country in Afghanistan, through service in the armed forces.

May we never forget just how much we owe to such personnel!

-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-

This Flower Festival is arranged to mark the 75th anniversary of INNER WHEEL (District 3), whose objects are Friendship, Service and International Understanding, by means of numerous. diverse, functions and club events which thrive through their intent to centre on fund-raising, personal service --and fun.

Each year, the District Chairman chooses a charity, and this year's worthy cause is the Alzheimer's Society, to support sufferers of the disease (and their carers). Few of us will not have some degree of knowledge of this sad condition.

Hopefully, all who have taken any part in this festival will see their efforts rewarded in the number of folk who take the opportunity to visit the Minster before the festival ends, on Sunday 22nd June.

....... AND FROM A TEMPORARY TO PERMANENT DISPLAY........

...

Bald Statements -the exhibition.

This exhibition is in place from Thursday 3rd April until 30th April and is largely introduced on the leaflet as a collection of eight alabaster sculptures illustrating the feelings of grief or loss. The exhibition was opened with a talk/presentation and refreshments on the evening of Thursday 3rd April.

There is no doubt that the sculptor is extremely talented and I enjoyed seeing the pieces for their individual qualities.

THE EXHIBITION

1. DENIAL --   I'm all right ...shocked-stunned protective mask

2. DISBELIEF   --    no! pain, protest, indignation

3. QUESTIONING    --     why? Search for meaning, need to make sense of...

4. ANGER     --   rage, anguish  -  realisation of grim reality

5. DEPRESSION     --      deep sadness, despair, desolation

6. ACCEPTANCE     --        awareness facing the reality of loss

7. HEALING       --     moving on to a peaceful place

8. PEACE     --    life no longer defined by the loss

Nick Portwood Exhibition - Sept 08

Unfortunately, time presses to the extent that I can not do anything like full justice to this stimulating exhibition from a young artist. All that I can do is give a brief flavour of his work, in the small ,sample, compilation below.... but first an extract from his programme.....
