SERVER

-------- Last, but not least, for a short while it is my privilege to add to this list one of the most worthy of servants of this church. In November, Eric Chater is celebrating his Golden Jubilee as a 'Servant of the Sanctuary'  -- a faithful server at Communion services for fifty years as well as the longstanding regular Crucifer at the church for several years.

I have known Eric for over 60 years, dating back to a time when we attended a Presbyterian Sunday School together, and we next met when I was a Choirboy at Bishopwearmouth in the mid 1950's, and were fellow servers when he finally persuaded the 'powers that be' to admit him to this service. It is my boast that I took a small part in training and encouraging Eric in this role, and now bask in the reflected glory of his great service, one role among many that he has achieved by his firm resolve, despite suggestions - mainly by younger members of the church's clerical team over the years - that he was not cut out for such positions.

For a while, he ran a small Youth Club at the church (again, through his 'persistence' ) and in the last five years or so he has become one of the church's regular readers at services. In doing this and despite his restricted vision,he has brought,in his readings of those sacred passages a clarity, warmth and deep understanding.

Congratulations, and thanks for your example, Eric.
